Soil Gas Monitor Installation Along Southeast Property Boundary to Begin September 28

September 22, 2011

Beginnining September 28, 2011, environmental consultants working for Cherokee Simeon Ventures, the property owners of the neighboring former Zeneca site, will install soil gas monitoring devices at four RFS buildings along the southeast property border with the Zeneca site.

Monitoring equipment installation is planned to begin on September 28, 2011 and should take on or two days. Installation of soil gas monitors involves hand augering (boring) holes 5-6 feet deep and placement of monitoring equipment into the borings. Soil gas monitors will be installed in four locations at the RFS along the eastern property boundary at Buildings B163, B178, B120, and B111. Soil gas sampling is planned to be completed in early October and will take one to two days.

This work is being completed as part of ongoing investigations of soil and groundwater at the neighboring former Zeneca site to confirm the extent of volatile hydrocarbons in the groundwater. Previous assessments of conditions by Public Health agencies and air monitoring completed by the campus Office of Environment, Health & Safety have determined that current site conditions are safe for workers. This monitoring work is being completed as a final step to confirm those assessments.

For more information on these activities, see the DTSC Work Notice, Zeneca Soil Monitoring Installation Work Plan, and the Work Plan DTSC Approval letter.
