Under the oversight of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), the University's environmental consultants will be conducting an environmental investigation at the Site. Work from January 8th through 12th involves sampling for PCBs in the Eastern Transition Area, shown on the figure below.

October 19, 2023

Under the oversight of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), the responsible party’s (University of California, Berkeley) environmental consultants will be conducting an environmental investigation at the Site. Work on October 26, 2023 consists of the removal of piezometer DHR; this work is permitted by Contra Costa County. The work from November 13 through 17, 2023 involves sampling for PCBs near the former Mercury Fulminate Area. Both areas are shown on the figure below.

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) issued a work notice for upcoming work at the Zeneca/Former Stauffer Chemical site that will extend into the Richmond Field Station property. 

May 11, 2023

Under the oversight of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), UC environmental consultants will be conducting soil removal at the Site. The work consists of excavation and disposal of PCB-contaminated soil identified during previous soil removal activities south of B120. The excavation area is approximately 20 x 15 feet, or 300-square feet and extends to 1.5 feet in depth. The area are shown on the linked figure.

The Final B112 Transformer Area PCB Cleanup and Removal Action Implementation Summary Report is now available on the Publications Page.

This report presents a summary of the soil removal action completed at the B112 transformer site located west of building 112 at the Richmond Field Station in December 2021, and February and March 2022.

January 20, 2023

The RFS has recieved over 20 inches of rain this rain year. This means the fields are fully saturated, and if you drive any large vehicles on to a field you will likely sink and get stuck.

Please stay off the fields until the RFS has had time to fully dry out, usually around May.

This is a work notice for upcoming environmental remediation work at the RFS EPA North Meadow beginning on Monday October 19, 2020.

The draft Mercury Fulminate Area Removal Action Implementation Summary Report was submitted to DTSC on September 30, 2020 and is now available on the Publications page.

September 17, 2020

On Friday September 18, 2020 drilling contractors working for UC Berkeley will install one monitoring well in the former mercury fulminate area (MFA). This is a replacement well for the one that was abandoned ahead of the January 2020 MFA removal action.  

In addtion the two monitoring wells in the EPA North Meadow will be abandoned in advance of the removal action in that area. Following construction activities in the meadow, the wells will be reinstalled. 

No traffic disruptions are expected due to this work.

Environmental consultants for the Zeneca/Former Stauffer Chemical Site at Campus Bay will begin implementation of the Pre-Design Investigation Work Plan starting the week of July 6, 2020.

This is a work notice for upcoming environmental remediation work at the RFS Mercury Fulminate Area (MFA) beginning on Tuesday January 7, 2020. 

The Draft Removal Action Workplan Research, Education, and Supporat Area and Groundwater Five-Year Review is now available for viewing. The purpose of a Five-Year Review is to evaluate the implementation and performance of a remedy to determine if the remedy is, and will continue to be protective of human health and the environment. 

December 10, 2019

As a follow-up to the removal action conducted at the Corproation Yard in the fall of 2017, additional data gap soil samples were collected within the near surface of the entire Corporation Yard, Building 185, and north of Building 197. The following letter presents PCB sampling results collected from near surface sediments in the Corporation Yard in August 2019.

A draft Feasibility Study and Removal Action Plan (FS/RAP) to address remediation planned in Lot 1, Lot 2, and Upland Portion of Lot 3 (currently scheduled for implementation in 2019 and 2020) was published on July 8, 2018. The public comment period for the Lot 1, Lot 2, and Upland portion of Lot 3 was extended to September 10, 2018. A Public Meeting was held at the Richmond Field Station on July 26th, 2018.

October 29, 2019

Beginning Wednesday November 6th, UC Berkeley will implement the Western Transition Area and Bulb investigations as part of the 2017 Phase V Field Sampling Plan.
