Fall 2011 Site Investigation and Well Closure Work Complete

November 22, 2011

In late October and early November environmental consultants for the University completed collecting soil samples for additional site characterization and closure of sixteen geosciences research groundwater monitoring wells no longer needed. The fall 2011 site characterization work involved collection of soil samples using a hand-auger and/or shovels to continue to address previously identified data gaps. Areas sampled included soil in the vicinity of power distribution transformers and the Corporation Yard. Well closure work was completed using a drill rig to destroy well casings. The wells were then grouted for permanent closure. The majority of the wells closed were in the Geosciences Well Field near building 300. One well closed waslocated on Lark Drive near B177. Ten wells remain in the Geosciences well field that will continue to be used by UC researchers. See the DTSC Work Notice for a map showing the locations of work.
